Sell a product on a repeat schedule
Charge customers automatically every week, month or year for a product or service, and change or remove the schedule later.
- Add-on: ask us about adding it
A repeat schedule charges a customer on its own: a coffee bag every month, a weekly lunch plan, a monthly donation. You set it up once on the product.
Online stores are an add-on. If your site doesn't have one yet, ask us about adding it; we quote it in writing first.
Don't see this?
It may be turned off for your site. Ask us and we'll take care of it.
Before you start
- Repeat schedules need Stripe. You connect your own Stripe account, and we never ask for your password. See Connect a way to take card payments.
- If you disconnect Stripe, every repeat schedule ends.
- They work for physical products, services and donations, but not for digital downloads.
- If a message asks you to upgrade something, stop and email us. If Stripe isn't connected when you save, the product is saved as Inactive, which hides it from shoppers.
Steps
- Log in to your site editor.
- In the side panel, click Store, then Catalog, then Product Catalog.
- For a new product, click + Add Product and pick the type. For an existing one, click the product.
- In Pricing, check One-time, Subscription or both, depending on whether customers can buy once, subscribe, or choose.
- Click + Add Subscription.
- In the Add a product subscription box, type a name and, if you like, a short tagline.
- Under Repeats every, set a number and choose Month, Week or Year.
- In Expires after, choose Never Expires, or Custom Period Of and a number of cycles. One month for 3 cycles runs for three months.
- Set the price. Customers pay on the day they buy, then again each cycle. To make a schedule more tempting, choose Offer % off the regular price.
- Click Save. A message confirms it.
A product can have up to 5 schedules. Ask us to put a login element on your site, so customers can sign in and manage their repeat orders.
How customers buy
- Customers sign up or log in before they pay.
- A repeat order has to be the only thing in the cart. It can't be bought together with other items or with another repeat order. Two of the same item is fine.
Change or remove a schedule
- Open the product in the Product Catalog.
- In Product subscriptions under Pricing, click the three dots beside the schedule.
- Choose Edit Subscription or Delete Subscription. In the box that appears, check the box to confirm, then click Edit Subscription Anyway or Delete Subscription.
- For an edit, make your changes and click Save.
An edit only applies to new subscribers. A new price doesn't change what current subscribers pay. Deleting a schedule doesn't end anyone's current plan, but deleting the whole product ends its repeat orders.
To see your list of subscribers, or to stop one for a customer, email us.
Tips
- Test the buying steps only after the site is published.
- Tell customers what they'll be charged and how often, right in the description.
