Save a backup before a big change

Save a named copy of your site in your editor so you can go back to it if a big change goes wrong.

A backup is a saved copy of your site, kept in your editor. Saving one before a big change gives you something to go back to.

When to save one

  • When you're happy with how your site looks.
  • After you finish something long, such as adding a lot of photos or rebuilding a page.
  • Before a big change, such as a new layout, a new menu or a second language.

Steps

  1. Log in to your site editor.
  2. In the side panel, click More, then Settings.
  3. Click Site Backup.
  4. In the New Version Name box, type a name you'll recognize later, for example "Before new menu, Oct 21".
  5. Click Save.

Saving a backup doesn't change your live site, so there's nothing to publish.

Good to know

  • Your editor also saves copies by itself, for example after each publish. Don't rely on those alone. The list holds up to 50 automatic copies and up to 50 that you save, and when it's full the oldest copy is removed to make room.
  • To remove a copy you no longer need, click the Delete link next to it on the same screen.
  • To go back to a copy, read Restore an earlier version of your site. Please email us first.
  • Your blog is saved along with the site.
