Find and fix broken links
List the links on your site that lead nowhere, then point each one to the right place or remove it.
A broken link is a button, menu item or underlined word that leads to a page that no longer exists. Customers hit a dead end. Your site can list them for you.
Steps
- Log in and open your site dashboard. In your site list, click the dashboard icon next to your site.
- Click Performance, then expand Optimization Center.
- Click Internal Links for links to your own pages, or External Links for links to other sites.
- Use the Broken filter to show only the broken links.
- Read each row. Page is where the link sits, Link Text is the words it's attached to, and Destination URL is where it goes. Click the destination to see it open in a new tab.
- Click Fix In Editor in the Status column. The page opens in the editor.
- Point the link to the right page, or remove it. See Change a button's link or wording and Link text or a photo to another page.
- Publish. If you don't see a Publish button, tell us and we'll publish it for you.
What usually went wrong
- A link to your own page: the page was renamed or deleted. Link to the page that replaced it. If other sites or old printed links point to the missing page, see Send an old link to a new page.
- A link to another site: that site moved or took the page down. Find the new address, or remove the link.
- A typo in the address: copy the web address from your browser's address bar and paste it in.
Tips
- Click Missing Link Text to find links with no words attached, such as a bare icon.
- The check doesn't look inside notification emails, your OpenTable button or a coupon. It reads only the first 50 items of any list-built page. It also skips stores built another way and sites over 200 pages. Check those yourself.
- Check again after you delete or rename a page.
- To see what else needs attention, see Run a site check and fix what it finds.
