Open a link in a new tab

Make a link to another website open in a new tab, so your own site stays open in the visitor's browser.

When a link to another website opens in a new tab, your page stays open behind it, so people can find their way back to you. You turn this on in the link settings.

Steps

  1. Log in to your site editor and open the page.
  2. Open the link settings:
    • Words: click the text, select the linked words and click the link icon in the bar above.
    • Button: click it, then choose the option for editing its content.
  3. Choose Web address.
  4. Paste the address of the other site, if it isn't there already.
  5. Turn on Open in new window.
  6. Publish. If you don't see a Publish button, tell us and we'll publish it for you.

The setting is labeled Open in new window.

Tips

  • You'll see a few other switches near this one, about how search engines treat the link. Leave them off unless we've told you otherwise.
  • To link to one of your own pages, see Link text or a photo to another page.
  • Click the link in the preview to check it opens where you expect.
