Let visitors add your site to their phone's home screen

Switch on the setting that lets visitors save your site on their phone's home screen like an app, and choose its name and icon.

Visitors can save your site on their phone's home screen, with an icon that opens it like an app. It's handy for a menu, a booking page or anything customers open often.

Before you start

Your site needs its padlock first. See What the padlock (https) means. You'll also need a logo at least 192 pixels wide, saved as a .png file.

Steps

  1. Log in to your site editor.
  2. In the side panel, click More, then Settings.
  3. Click Progressive Web App.
  4. Switch on Activate Progressive Web App.
  5. To let phones offer your site as an app, switch on Enable mobile browsers to prompt to install the site as an app.
  6. Fill in the settings that appear:
    • Name: shown on the opening screen and in the message that offers to add your site. Up to 60 characters.
    • Short Name: used where space is tight, such as under the icon on a home screen. Keep it as short as you can.
    • Icon: your logo, at least 192 pixels wide, as a .png file.
    • Splash screen background color: the color shown while your site loads.
  7. Publish. If you don't see a Publish button, tell us and we'll publish it for you.

What visitors see

On Android phones that use Chrome, the browser offers to add the site. On an iPhone, the browser doesn't offer it, so visitors add it themselves. Apple's help pages show how.

About the cache setting

You may see a switch called Serve pages markup from cache first. When it's on, a phone shows the saved copy of a page first. That's quick, but visitors may see an older copy until you publish again. Leave it off if your hours, prices or menu change often.

Tips

  • The home screen picture on iPhones and iPads comes from Home Screen Icon (Mobile & Tablet) in Favicon & Social Images. Use a square image, 57 x 57 pixels or larger. See Change the small icon in the browser tab.
  • Email us your logo if you'd like us to prepare the files.
