Google and search

Hide a page from search engines

Ask Google and other search engines to leave one page out of their results, and what that does and doesn't do.

Some pages don't need to show up on Google: a thank-you page, an offer for one group of customers, an old page you want to keep. You can ask search engines to leave a page out of their results. This is a request, not a lock. Anyone with the page's link can still open it.

Steps

  1. Log in to your site editor.
  2. In the side panel, click Pages.
  3. Click the three horizontal dots next to the page.
  4. Click Edit Page SEO.
  5. Switch on the No Index toggle. On some screens it reads Set page to no index.
  6. Do the same for any other page you want left out.
  7. Publish. If you don't see a Publish button, tell us and we'll publish it for you.

To bring a page back into search, email us and we'll do it.

Watch out

Hide only pages you don't want customers to find through Google. Never hide your homepage or the pages that describe what you sell. And don't try to hide the whole site yourself: see Set your site's search title and description and ask us first.

Good to know

  • If Google already lists the page, it can take several weeks to drop it.
  • A page you keep as a draft is left out of search automatically, and it isn't on your live site at all.
  • Hiding a page from your menu doesn't make it private. It's still on your live site, and anyone with the link can open it.
  • For a page that must stay private, use a password instead. See Put a password on a page.
  • Your site automatically sends change alerts to search engines that accept them, so they notice updates sooner. There's nothing for you to do, and it doesn't change where a page appears.
