Add a WhatsApp button
Add a button that opens a WhatsApp chat with your business number, with the number format that makes it work.
This button opens a WhatsApp chat with your business in one tap. On a computer, visitors who have the WhatsApp desktop app see the chat open there. Visitors who only use WhatsApp in a browser are asked to continue there or log in.
Before you start
- You need a WhatsApp account on the number you'll use. Use a business number you want to answer, not a personal one.
- Visitors can see the number you add. Don't use one you want to keep private.
- Chats happen in WhatsApp, and we don't see them.
Steps
- Log in to your site editor and open the page.
- In the side panel, click Add, then click Elements.
- Search for WhatsApp and drag it where you want it.
- Click it to open its floating bar, then open its content settings.
- Type your WhatsApp number using digits only. Start with the country code, which is 1 for the United States, then the area code, then the rest of the number. No spaces, no dashes, no brackets and no plus sign. Any of those breaks the link.
- Optional: type a first message people start with, such as "Hello, a question about a booking". Visitors can change it before they send.
- Type a short description of the button for the Alt Text field. See Write alt text in plain words.
- Publish. If you don't see a Publish button, tell us and we'll publish it for you.
Keep it on screen
Click Edit Design in the floating bar and turn on Floating. Choose where it sits. Turn on Show on this page only if you don't want it on every page.
Good to know
- Visitors who don't have WhatsApp are sent to the page where they can install it.
- On an iPad or other iOS tablet, visitors see a page that tells them to download the app for a phone or computer.
- Test it from your own phone after you publish. The chat should open with your number and your first message.
- You answer these chats yourself, in WhatsApp. If you can't reply quickly, a contact form or a tap-to-call button may fit better: Add a contact form.
