Add a countdown to a date
Show a live countdown to an opening, an event or the end of an offer, with a message that appears when time is up.
A countdown shows visitors how long until something happens: your grand opening, a tasting night, the last day of a seasonal menu. It counts down in real time on the page.
Before you start
To put a countdown on a page, add the Countdown widget, the same way you add any widget (see Add a widget to a page), or email us the page and where it should go, and we'll add it. After that, you can change the date and wording yourself.
Steps
- Log in to your site editor and open the page with the countdown.
- Click it. In the small toolbar that appears, open the content settings.
- Pick when the countdown ends: the date, the time and the time zone. For an exact time such as 11:45 pm, click into the time box and type it as "11:45pm".
- Type a Time's up message. People see it when the countdown ends. You can bold or italicize the words.
- Choose what shows when time is up: Show counter at 0000 and message beneath it, or Remove counter and display message only.
- Type a Title, such as "Grand opening in". If you'd rather not show the title, click the eye icon beside it.
- To change how it looks, click the countdown, then open its design settings and pick a layout. Check the design on each device, because spacing and sizes are set separately for phones and computers.
- Preview the page, on a phone too.
- Publish. If you don't see a Publish button, tell us and we'll publish it for you.
Tips
- Pick the right time zone. A countdown set for the wrong one ends hours early or late.
- Write a time's-up message that tells people what to do next, such as "We're open. Come see us."
- Once the date has passed, update or remove the countdown so the page doesn't look stale.
- Use it only for real dates. A countdown that keeps restarting looks odd to regulars.
