Turn on automatic sales tax

Connect a tax service so your store works out the tax for each order by location, and switch back to typed-in rates if you change your mind.

  • Add-on: ask us about adding it

Online stores are an add-on. If your site doesn't have one yet, ask us about adding it; we quote it in writing first.

Don't see this?

It may be turned off for your site. Ask us and we'll take care of it.

With automatic sales tax, a tax service works out the tax on each order from the customer's location and what they bought. You don't type in rates yourself. Right now it's available for stores in the United States.

We can't tell you what you owe or where you have to collect tax. Ask your accountant.

Before you start

  • Have an email address and a business address ready for the account form. Each needs to be accurate and not already tied to another account with the tax service. Your store's own business details are in Set your store's business details.
  • You'll create or log in to an account with the tax service. You do that yourself, and we never see your password.
  • Any tax zones you typed in before are kept, in case you switch back.

Turn it on

  1. Log in to your site editor.
  2. In the side panel, click Store, then Business Settings.
  3. Click Taxes.
  4. Click Get started.
  5. Fill in the form to create an account with the tax service. If you already have one, click Log in.
  6. Back on the tax screen in your store, click Add or Manage Taxes. A new window or tab opens with your account in it.
  7. Set up the regions you collect in, following the service's own help.

Once the regions are set, they show on your store's tax screen but you can't change them there. Make any changes in your account with the tax service. They go live on your store as soon as you save them, with no need to publish.

Good to know

  • Apple Pay and Google Pay can't be used through Stripe at the same time as automatic sales tax. Google Pay isn't supported with it at all. See Add Apple Pay.
  • Orders, including refunds, are sent to your account with the tax service. To stop that, go to Taxes, click the three horizontal dots next to Add or Manage Taxes and choose the option that starts with Disable transactions recording.

Switch back to typed-in rates

  1. Go to Store, Business Settings, Taxes.
  2. Click the three horizontal dots next to Add or Manage Taxes.
  3. Choose Switch to manual taxes.

Switching has effects. Future orders and refunds, including refunds on orders made while automatic tax was on, no longer go to the tax service. The regions you set up with it disappear. Checkout stops working out tax for you, so you need to enter your own rates. See Set up sales tax.

Need a hand?

If your site doesn't have this yet, ask us about adding it. We quote it in writing first, and nothing is billed unless you approve. Email hello@zossoz.com.

Setting this up needs you to create or sign in to your own account, so we can't do that step for you. If the Get started button is missing, or you'd like to switch back, email hello@zossoz.com with your business name and we'll look into it. We reply within one business day. See Request a change.
