Online store
Ask customers to agree to your terms at checkout
Add a box customers must tick to agree to your terms before they can pay, with a link to your terms page.
- Add-on: ask us about adding it
Online stores are an add-on. If your site doesn't have one yet, ask us about adding it; we quote it in writing first.
A terms checkbox makes customers tick "I agree" before they can pay. It's a good place to point people to your returns, shipping and other store rules.
Before you start
Have your terms page ready. If you don't have one, see Add terms, returns and privacy pages to your store.
What your terms say depends on your business and the rules where you sell. We can't give legal advice, so ask a lawyer to look over them if you aren't sure.
Steps
- Log in to your site editor.
- In the side panel, click Store, then Business Settings.
- Click Checkout.
- Find Terms and Conditions and tick the checkbox.
- In the text box, type the message customers will see next to the box. Include a link to your terms page.
- Click Save.
Customers see the box in the Payment section of checkout. It starts unticked, and they have to tick it before they can place their order.
If you aren't sure how to add the link inside your message, email us the message and the address of your terms page and we'll set it up.
Tips
- Keep the message short, for example: "I agree to the terms and returns policy."
- Place an order yourself to check the box shows, the link opens your terms page and you can't pay without ticking.
- A separate box asking customers to join your email list is its own setting. See Ask customers to join your email list at checkout.
