Turn on a cookie notice
Show every visitor a short notice that your site uses cookies. Preview it, change the wording and check the rules with your lawyer.
Cookies are small files a website saves in a visitor's browser. Your site uses them for things like counting visits. A cookie notice is a short message that tells visitors this is happening.
Before you start
Whether your business needs a notice, and what it must say, depends on your situation. Please check with your lawyer. This setting only switches the notice on.
Steps
- Log in to your site editor.
- In the side panel, click More, then Settings.
- Click Privacy Settings.
- Switch on the Activate cookie notification toggle. Every visitor now sees a notice that information about their visit is collected as cookies.
- Click Preview notification to see it on a computer, tablet and phone.
- Keep the standard wording, or write your own. The text box takes any text, and you can add links to it, such as a link to your privacy page.
- Publish. If you don't see a Publish button, tell us and we'll publish it for you.
What visitors see
The notice is fixed to the top of the page, so it stays in view while visitors scroll, and it leaves your page content uncovered.
Tips
- The cookie notice takes priority over your site's notification bar and covers it. If you use that bar for announcements, such as a closure, tell us before you turn the notice on. See Put up a closure banner.
- Add a link to your privacy page in the notice text. See Add a privacy page to your site.
- If you'd like to stop your site from using tracking cookies altogether, read Turn off tracking cookies.
