Fix a photo that looks cut off or blurry

Why a photo gets trimmed or looks soft on your page, and the quick fixes for each.

Two different things go wrong with photos on a page. Either part of the photo is missing, or it looks soft or blocky. Each has its own fix.

If part of the photo is cut off

This happens when the photo's shape doesn't match the spot it sits in. The spot wins, and the edges of the photo are trimmed.

  1. Log in to your site editor and open the page.
  2. Crop the photo to the shape of the spot, so you choose what stays. See Crop or rotate a photo.
  3. In a gallery or slider, click the photo and use its position setting to adjust which part shows.
  4. Or show the whole photo. Open the design settings (right-click and choose Edit Design, or use the design option in the small menu) and look for a setting that shows the full photo. Sliders, galleries and (in the newer editor) a single photo have one. For a section background, choose Full Image instead of Cover.
  5. Publish. If you don't see a Publish button, tell us and we'll publish it for you.

If the photo looks blurry

  1. Check the size. A small photo stretched across a wide spot looks blocky, because the editor never enlarges a photo. Upload a larger version of the original. See Pick the right photo size and file type.
  2. Check the original. A photo that was already soft stays soft. Retake it if you can.
  3. Turn off shrinking for this photo. The editor makes photos lighter for each screen, which can occasionally soften one. Open the photo's design settings, go to the Style area and switch on Do not optimize this image. In a gallery, look in its design settings for the setting that turns it off.
  4. Publish.

Turning shrinking off can slow the page, so only do it for a photo that really needs it.

Looks too small on a phone?

A wide photo that fills a computer screen can look small on a phone. You can show a different photo on phones, or change the shape. See Hide something on phones or on computers and Check how your site looks on a phone.
