Blog and posts

Bring in posts from another blog

Copy the posts from an old blog of your own into your site's blog, using the old blog's feed address. Imported posts arrive as drafts.

If you've been posting on another blog of your own, you can copy those posts into the blog on your site. They arrive as drafts, so you decide when each one goes live.

Before you start

  • Only import posts you wrote, or have the right to use.
  • You need the old blog's feed address, called an RSS feed. It isn't the same as the address of the blog's page. Many blogs made with WordPress have a feed address that ends in /feed. If you can't find it, email us the old blog's address.
  • The feed must include the full text of each post, not only a short summary.
  • It can include at most 300 posts.
  • Each post's web address can use only plain English letters, numbers and common symbols.
  • It helps to check the feed first with the W3C Feed Validator.

What comes across

Headings, paragraphs, pictures, YouTube and Vimeo videos, dividers, comment boxes, and each post's author and date. Things the editor doesn't support are left behind. Posts made with an older text editor can lose some formatting, which you can add again.

The editor backs up your site by itself before it starts the import. Going back to a backup from before the import removes the imported posts.

Steps

  1. Log in to your site editor.
  2. In the side panel, click Blog.
  3. Click Import Posts.
  4. Paste the old blog's feed address into the box, then click Import posts.
  5. Wait for the message that the import has finished. If it fails, you'll see why, and none of the posts come across.
  6. Read through the imported posts. They are drafts.
  7. Publish the posts you want. If you don't see a Publish button, tell us and we'll publish it for you.

If it doesn't import

  • Check that you used the feed address, not the blog's page address.
  • Check that the feed holds the full text of each post and no more than 300 posts.
  • Email us the old blog's address and we'll take a look.

Tips

  • Keep the old blog up until you've checked every imported post. If you delete the old blog, the pictures brought across from it are removed too.
  • Check the first few posts on a phone, then read the rest.
  • To show another blog's posts without copying them, see Show posts from another blog.
