Set your site's main language

Change the language of the built-in text on your site, such as buttons, dates and notices. The words you wrote don't change.

This setting changes the built-in words your site uses, in a language you choose. It doesn't translate anything you wrote. To translate your own text, see Add another language to your site.

What changes

Only text that comes with your site's tools, and it's already translated for you. Some examples:

  • Buttons and links such as "Read more", "View more" and "Print coupon".
  • Dates and day names in your hours.
  • Blog labels such as the author line and older and newer posts.
  • Messages on password-protected pages, the "page not found" page and the robot check on forms.
  • The language of your map and addresses.
  • The standard wording of the cookie notice.

You can't edit this built-in wording. If you want different words on a button, change the button itself. See Change a button's link or wording.

Steps

  1. Log in to your site editor.
  2. In the side panel, click More, then Settings.
  3. Click Site Language.
  4. Language already added to your site? Use the dropdown beside the default language to pick it.
  5. If it isn't there yet, click Manage Languages and choose it.
  6. Publish. If you don't see a Publish button, tell us and we'll publish it for you.

Good to know

  • Many languages are supported. If yours isn't one of them, the built-in text stays in English.
  • It matters most for sites written in something other than English. For an English site, you don't need to change anything.
  • Picking a language here doesn't add a translated copy of your site.
