Change a section's background color or image

Give a section a new color, a photo or a slideshow of photos behind it, and choose how the picture fills the space.

A section's background sits behind everything in it. A plain color keeps things calm. A photo adds mood. Here is how to change either one.

Steps

  1. Log in to your site editor and open the page.
  2. Click the section to open its small menu, then click Design.
  3. Find the Background section of the design panel.
  4. Choose Color, Image or Video, depending on what the section offers.
  5. For a color, pick one from the color picker. See Save your brand colors.
  6. For an image, pick one from the photo library or upload your own.
  7. Look at the result. Check it on the phone view too.
  8. Publish. If you don't see a Publish button, tell us and we'll publish it for you.

Use several photos as a slideshow

Where a section offers it, choose Image, click the plus sign and select more than one photo, then click Done. The photos take turns behind the section. Once it's set up, you can choose how they change and how fast.

Choose how the picture fills the space

After you pick a photo, a few more options appear:

  • Cover: fills the whole section. Parts of the photo may be cut off.
  • Full image: nothing is cropped, but there may be empty strips beside or above and below the photo.
  • Tile: repeats the photo at its normal size to fill the space.
  • No repeat: one copy of the photo at its normal size. A small photo leaves space around it, and a large one gets cut off.

Use Position to decide whether the photo sits in the center, the top, the bottom or a side. The position can be set separately for each screen size.

On some sections you can also choose how the photo behaves when someone scrolls: Default, Static or Parallax. Static doesn't work on iPhones.

Change the color as visitors scroll

In the Style part of the design panel, pick a Background color, then turn on Change color on scroll and choose a Background color on scroll. The section fades from one color to the other as someone scrolls down to it.

Tips

  • Words on top of a photo need to stay easy to read. Pick a quiet area of the photo, or a plain color instead.
  • If part of a photo is cut off, switch to Full image, or choose a different photo that fits the shape.
  • Everything you upload is publicly available on the internet. Don't upload anything private.
  • If you use a single photo, a Do not optimize this image switch appears after you pick it. Turn it on to stop the editor from optimizing that photo.
